Safety Campaigns Have Positive Impact

When you hear about the accidents that take place here in Pasco County that result in injuries and deaths you are obviously going to be saddened. Many people will shake their heads while resigning themselves to the fact that accidents do happen and there’s really nothing that will stop them.
The truth is that the majority of accidents occur due to the actions of one or more of the drivers that are involved. Other accidents take place because of vehicle or product defects. These are things that can be corrected and there’s no reason to accept the fact that we are going to see a certain number of accidents because there are things that can be done to make the highways increasingly safer.
Safety campaigns have a positive impact that can be statistically measured, and though people sometimes cringe at the thought of government spending when money is spent in the right way it can save lives. As a case in point, it has recently been announced that DUI related fatalities in the state of California dropped to a record low in 2010. The use of alcohol was involved in 791 fatal accidents, and this is a reduction of 17% over the 950 people who were killed in 2009.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration credits pointed safety initiatives for the record-setting improvement and it would appear as though funding had an impact. $16.8 million was set aside by the federal government to fund checkpoints intended to root out intoxicated drivers in 2010 as opposed to $11.7 million in 2009.
Hopefully this trend will continue on into the future, and you can do your part by vowing to never get behind the wheel after you have had a few drinks. With the holiday season in full swing it is especially important to stay disciplined and provide a positive example for others.
