IIHS Releases Annual Top Safety Pick List

They say that you can make statistics tell any story that you want them to, so it is always a good idea to check the source of any statistical research that you see. The insurance industry takes a great interest in the safety of motor vehicles because, to put it bluntly, the safer the roadways are, the less money they have to pay out for accident claims. In fairness, nobody wants to see anyone wreck their car or get hurt in an accident regardless of the industry they’re in, but the reality is that driver safety does directly impact the bottom line of auto insurers.

With this in mind, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is a not-for-profit entity that receives its financial support from people who have a vested interest in automotive safety: motor vehicle insurance companies. They conduct a series of automotive safety tests each year and then rate the cars for safety according to how well they perform. They test the strength of the roof; the reliability of the safety restraints and how well they mitigate neck trauma; they put the cars through front, rear and side crash tests; and they evaluate how resistant the vehicles are to rollovers.
